Unit 78 Digital graphics for computer games
Pixel art (2D Sprites, 3D Isometric Sprites)
Is a form of digital art and was used a lot for older game versions. Pixel Art is when lots of small squares that make up a character or image. A 2D Sprite changes to reflect the way the characters are going, The 3D Isometric Sprites is when the character is a 3D and would require more pixels because of the different angles that the character can move. Pixel Art usually uses 16 because they are normally ran on older versions.
These are examples of characters from games that have pixels under 16bit. On the left they are 8 and to the right its 16bit, there is a clear difference in graphics between some pixels. This proves that the more the pixels, the better the quality will be.
Concept Art, E.g. Character, Weapon, Vehicle, Environment,
Concept Art is when a design is progressed in sections. For example: the characters weapons would be edited in till the creators were happy and then piece by piece the design will go together
In this image the weapon is being edited so it gives the best affect to the character. Even the character is edited in sections i.e. The head and the body are usually edited separately and then put together.
These are drawn first then added with tone and then in colour.
Texture Art
Texture Art is the artwork that goes on to 3D models so people can get a good idea on what the character or prop the designers want.
An example of this: is a floor or a wall that would need some type of texture to allow the object or prop to look its best.
This texture is found in games that have has a war zone or a place that has been deserted. This type of texture would be found on walls or floors in games.
The main games that are highly liked will have some sort of texture to give a different feel towards the game
Background Graphics, E.g. Walls, Forest, Clouds
Background Graphics is the graphics that the game has in its backgrounds. This can be a map that has a background a city or forest etc. The background is pasted in the background so the detail of it will look good but close up it wont, how ever its not need to look good close up.
Games like Call of duty use this technique of pasting the images on the background. Background Graphics are used to make the game seem bigger and more realistic.
In-Game Interface, E.g. Head up Display
The Games Interface is what is on the screen. This could be a health bar, Stats, maps or even things that disappear after a while for example: a hint or a red screen to signify your being damaged.
This is an image of someone being damaged, this is an example of the games interface which disappears after a while, (in this case not to be damaged)
The Games interface is very important as it shows the player how well or how bad they are doing at that exact time. Without some type of interface the game would be hard to play.
Print Media Art, E.g. Game Packaging, Box Cover, Manual, Label, Poster
Print Media Art is mainly advertisement which is found on Game packaging, manuals, posters etc. This is to create a bigger target audience and to get more sales on the game. All games have some type of advertising and want people to notice them.
This is an image of BioShock Infinite, This game is advertising through the game case, manual, poster.
Print Media art is very important if the game wants a big enough audience to make a profit.
