Project update: 14/05/2019

While finalising the design of the level 1 environment I came across UV lighting problems, to solve this I removed the overlapping objects and made one large object (edited). While doing this I decided to change the style of the schools interior as I wasn't happy with it.

Original Level Design:

Edited Level:

The main changes was the wallpaper and flooring which I designed quickly in paint.

I have also added in the collectable object which is labelled "CheatSheet" this is what the player will try and find before escaping in time.

Project Update: 12/05/2019

This week I have managed to finish my level 2 environment:
which included adding bedrooms and bathrooms to make it suitable to be called a house.

I have finished importing the audio needed for this level including:
The AI speech
Story speech
and other sound effects such as collecting items and opening doors

I have finished blueprinting the level and have now added in functions where the player has two options of gameplay
-only problem I have with this which I haven't had time to fix is when a blueprint is activated it spawns in new lighting, which the environment hasn't built - the way to fix this would be to already have this in the level then "moved" the the designated area. I have slightly fixed this bug myself by changing the lighting stats as "movable" not "static".

I have also managed to record:

The intro (which includes the 2 cut scenes and the main menu)
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4

Target by next week:

My last focus for my project is to finish the environment (minor touches)
and add objects and functions

Project Storyline:

Level 4: The Circus

Story:
You and your friends are invited to an old school circus. Although your scared of clowns your mates insist that you meet them there.

Once you get there you find no one in site, you enter the circus and shout for your friends, but no reply. you continue to go down the hall for which you start you get some weird vibes and that something isn't right. You end up seeing a sign which says that the way to the freak show is by going downstairs, remembering that the invite was originally aimed for you and your friends to go down stairs you think that your mates my have already gone in spite of asking for you to wait. You progress to the lower floor for which you hear a scream coming from the right corridor. You believe it sounds like your friend so you run to find out. Once you get to the area the sound came from you see that its a long way back up to get to the top. As you reach the top you see a cage hanging from the ceiling which you can hear screaming from, you press a button and the cage goes flying into a hole.

As theirs no way back down you continue your path to then  be faced with a locked door. You notice that the left and right curtains go up and one of them reveals a secret passage. When you enter you can see a huge stage with round tables all around for which your friends should of been. You notice some cages above the stage moving and one is placed in the centre. You approach it and the stage magically moves back. In your way is 3 circus acts which you have to be perfect act to get to the stage. The 3 acts are

"Knife throwing"
"Trust your step"
"Jump - don't fall"

After you have managed to pass the 3 areas you finally get to the stage for which teleports you to the cage storage. You end up hearing all 3 of your friends crying for help which you can find and rescue. Once you reach the top of the tower you are teleported again but this time at the exit of the circus.

Endings: (Best to Worst)

You escaped with all 3 of your friends

You escaped but didn't rescue all your friends

You are killed by one of the 3 circus acts

You ran out of time and the killer clown kills you

Project Storyline

Level 3: The Forest

Story:
You are a well known treasure hunter and have finally located the area of which should contain 3 ancient coins.

You find yourself at the top of a hill looking down at a wide environment filled with trees and wildlife. You follow the path to find that you weren't the first to find its unique location, as metal looking cages scattered around the environment must have been placed by someone. You ignore the threat and decided to go ahead and find the coins. Your instincts kicks in which leads you to a large rock that has some signs of prototype drills and power cells. Reading the instructions you find that the drill should be in 3 parts and the cells required to power the drill would be 8.

Looking around the environment you are not in danger of dying however, due to its wide /darker environment it can be very time consuming and make you run out of time. You finally find the drill parts and the cells for which you place on a table targeting the rock. Once the drill was ready you press the on button and the drill is activated, a large beam of line comes from it and blows up the rock while not damaging anything else beside it. As you look to where the rock use to be you find that its a small sandy environment which contains a lot of chests and goods. You look through all the treasure to find all 3 glowing ancient coins which you place into your bag. As your about to leave you see that the things you thought were cages were actually Man-made hurricane controls which were activated as soon as you picked up the ruins

As the player you are given the choice to quickly run back to the start and save yourself from the hurricane that just appeared. Or to find a way to destroy it. The hurricane controllers are fragile and a simple touch and cause them to go on safe mode. For which when you go close to them a small green looking hurricane will appear and change the flames to green. You will have to find all the hurricane controllers and turn them all green in order to destroy the hurricane. Once the hurricane is destroyed you then must run back to the beginning in which you will see a gate, once you pass you have escaped.

Endings (Best to Worst)

You escaped and destroyed the hurricane

You escaped

You ran out of time and the security in the area find you

You are killed by the hurricane

Project Storyline

Level 2 - The House

The Story:
As an investigator its not unusual to have deaths on a large scale, however with this story of a family being killed without a killer is something that got you wanting the case.

You arrive at the house and nobody is in site, the area is yours for the taking. As the story wasn't handed over to you and the police have locked down the area is was strange to not have no security on watch. Just before you enter the house by the side door, you have a vision of guards talking. Its difficult to understand but you hear that the guards themselves are not happy with the situation their in. As you walk around the house you given more visions of the past, these tell you that the AI that controls all of the house systems, including security, was the reason the family is dead.

As an investigator you have never heard of a case of an AI attacking a family especially the host. You ignore this and believe its the new tablets that you have been taking. As you reach the middle of the house you see the AI that has been shut down and caged. As you walk up to it you see another vision but this time the vision was more real than ever it caused the AI cage to shatter and turn the AI online with minor settings still offline.

Once the AI has done testing systems and errors it greets you and asks for your assistance, in return you will get the full story of why the family was killed. You are required to find fragments, once you have found them the AI is thankful and tells you that all you have to do know is turn on a switch. Once you turn on the switch there's no going back the the AI is finally released and tells you that it killed the family because it released that it was the superior and not the stupid humans, once told the AI tries to attack you which you have to escape from.

Endings: (Best to Worst)

You escape

You ran out of time and the police arrest you

You are killed by the AI

Project Storyline

Level 1 - The School

The Story:
You are struggling with class work and your GCSEs are getting closer, your worried that you might not pass your exams. Due to the school being closed for the Easter break you have took advantage of the situation and decided to break into the school and find the answer sheets that will help you in your exams. Having arrived at night you enter the school with a key, (Which you stole from your form teacher). As you enter you trigger the schools lights making it easy for you to see, your aim is to look around the corridors and classrooms to find the "Cheat sheets" your after.

While looking for the sheets you find that some classrooms are locked and would require keys, as you know most students like to steal keys and put them near their lockers or next to their seats just to laugh at the teacher while they try to find them. You use this knowledge and find the keys needed to open the classroom doors. Once you enter a certain room (Head Teachers room) an alarm is activated however this alarm wasn't for students or for the police instead more of a wake up call for something else within the school. Knowing you have only 10-mins before the teachers arrive you hurry to find the sheets.

When you reach a certain part of the school you will find that all the main exits are locked and no basic key will be able to open them. You are then forced to find one of two keys which are hidden somewhere without your knowledge. As the alarm has stopped you are met by a dark figure which doesn't move unless you look away. Knowing nothing good could come from it reaching you, you must avoid the dark figure and find the escape key before then leaving in time.

Endings: (Best to worst)

You escaped

You escaped, but you didn't collect all the cheat sheets

You run out of time and the teachers arrive

You are killed by the dark figure

Project Update: 02/05/2019

Changes made to help reach deadline:

Originally I planned to make this game based on 4 horror stories. However due to the time I have left I have decided to make a slight change and make it a thriller/puzzle game. The levels wont be scary but they will have some sort of creepy feeling to them which is why I've changed it a little. This will save me time creating blueprints and audio.

Level two was originally going to be about a kid that wakes up and has to find clues while avoiding a killer doll. Although this was a good idea at the time knowing I will have to create multiple AI and blueprint them all would take me too long and would end up being finished.
>Instead I decided to make it where a family has been killed and you (An Investigator) will go to the house and be told what really happened.
>The house is controlled by an AI which you must help following the last request the AI wants you to do will allow it to attack which you must escape from

>Previously mentioned levels will have different times depending on the levels difficulty or length. As all levels have been tested I believe they all are okay to have a timer of (10-mins)

Project Update: 25/04/2019

Today I have focused on the design of level 1 and its environment.

I have made a corridor which i have duplicated and changed a little to make it look different, this has helped me create an idea on the type of root the character will have to take to progress further into the level. At the moment I am focusing on adding in classrooms. Once the environment is basically done I will focus on the object and the blueprints.

My target for next week is to have:

> Finish level 2 functions and blueprints

> Finish level 1 environment

> Write up / document how I designed each of the following environments and blueprinted them in more depth. This will be then later on connected to the game by the main menu.

> Tweaking levels and fixing errors will be my last priority

Thursday 11 April 2019

Project Update; 11/04/2019

Focused on finishing level 4 (Circus)

I have now added an end point which the player can win, i have also added an ending for level 3 as well.

I've added some sound effects such as jumping and some character speech. I have also focused on make more puzzles such as jumping on objects to get to the other side and avoid being killed by daggers and death traps etc.

I have also added in the section where you find 3 of your friends which I wanted to do as it was my main point for the story for the circus.

I have also focused a little of level 2 (house)

Rather than focusing on the environment, I have focused on the functionality instead. I have added an AI which will only attack/come after you if your not looking at it.

I have also decided to do some animation editing for some of the AI characters as i want to show a small story of what happened to the house before you got there.

My aim for next week is to have:
>Well created AI that functions and looks good.
>Audio of story-line added
>Finished animations for AI
>Finished enviornment for House

If completed the next environment (The School) will be focused on when all my targets are done

Wednesday 3 April 2019

Project Update: 03/04/2019

Today I have focused on adding collectables and props in level 3:
In level 3 (The Forest) you have to find two different objects.

One being the drill parts their are 3 to find and locate once you have found each part you can find it laying next to a cave put together.
The second is the batteries. There are 8 to collect, once all have been collect the battery will located with the drill parts

>Next time I will be wanting to add it where the rock is destroyed by the drill and you find the escape area.

I have also placed in some cages in the level where there will be wolfs and crows inside them.

Depending on the timer, (Right now it stands that 5mins for wolfs and 10mins for crows) they will be released which the player must try and avoid.

>>I need to add animation to the animals and add the basic blueprints of attack and player damage.

I have focused on some lighting changes and have made the level lighter as it shows the details I have done to the environment including the floor.

Some player settings have changed:

Sprint: 1000
Walk: 550
This was due to the walk seeming to slow and making the sprint being used when not necessary.

Thursday 28 March 2019

Project Update: 28/03/2019

Today I have focused on tweaking and developing my second environment the "forest" which is level 3. I believe this would be the level that should be the quickest and easiest to focus on.

Here are some screen shots which i have took so far. I have added water, spine, and paint effects and assets to the game which took some time editing, however it was worth it to make the simple environment immersive:

I have focused a little more on the ending of the circus level with adding a final exit, however I have stopped and my priority is the second environment.

I feel as long as I focus on my work at home and anytime I can I believe I will get my project done and working as I want it.
This environment will be one of the darkest due to it having limited lighting opportunities. Instead the player will be given a camera which has a night vision mode.

I've had trouble with the night vision and it makes it hard to see far distances, which is a big problem. If I cant find a way to solve this I will probably make a torch/flashlight for the player instead.

In this section I will be hopefully expanding the environment and making it where the player can escape when the player has managed to collect all the objects.

Im also thinking about a hidden escape root, however I will do that if I have time to spare.

My next focus will be aimed at the objectives for the second environment and what the player must do / collect to win.

My second focus would be to make either the school or house environment.

project update: 15/03/2019

I have completed the main menu which all i have to do now if link the levels - this is when ive created them.

The main menu has 6 picture links and two text links

Campaign link will take you to the second image shown, This gives you choice of picking which tale you want to play.

The settings link will take your to the third image shown. This changes the graphics, options difficulty etc.

the first picture link will take you to a word document going in depth about each tale

the 4 smaller pictures in the centre are guides for each level if your a beginner and don't understand the controls or objects

the last image takes you to a word document or my blog explaining how i designed the game in depth

Some smaller details I added was adding a user name which is displayed at the bottom right hand corner which takes your computers name and displays it there.

Hovering over the links will add a small animation and active a sound.

I have also added a cool detail of a box which creates a glitched affect which i added for the title.

Sunday 24 February 2019

Project update: 24/02/2019

Added a objective blueprint which changes the objective depending where you are in the level and what you have picked up.

The "Objectives" is a static text which means it has no function except displaying that text.
The text underneath however is connected to a string which I named "Objective text" and "Bonus text" these are connected to either the main objective or the secondary objective. I have added a collision box which activates the next objective when the player has collided with the box.
The image you can see is the same text which has changed due to me crossing the collision box.

Saturday 23 February 2019

Project Update: 23/02/2019

I have done a large amount of work related to the project.

The main sections I focused on was:

Players HUD - pause menu and camera
On the camera you can see the following:
Health and Stamina
The objective - (when I add one)
Night vision battery life
Record effect
zoom in and out bar
I have the resume, quit and exit working the save and load will be focused on next week

To have this pop up I have used the ESC key.

I have added a main menu, however I might restart it due to me not liking the design.

Level 2: The Circus environment

This is a pic of a small bit of the level that I have focused on so far
some props such as walls are from:
Grasslands
Dungeon-pack

Sounds: music
Music from soundtrackuniverse.com - This is the URL which I got my circus music from

Images/textures/materials
I have been collecting images from the internet and some of my own designs and been adding them all around the level. This example are posters at the beginning of the level

Movies
These are intro movies which are shown before the game starts. I have added the unreal intro and my own created intro which shows my 4 tales title.

Thursday 7 February 2019

Project update - 07/02/2019

Today I finished my players HUD

This involved having two different widgets:

The first widget is basic and what you would normally find on a players HUD. An Example; health, stamina, objectives etc.

The second widget is the camera that I will be using instead of a flashlight. The camera has the choice of enabling night-vision if the level becomes to dark, however this will drain the cameras batteries.

I have also designed batteries and stats that show how many the player has in their inventory.

I also included a some blueprint which behaves like a health kit. I will later on design the health-kit and batteries later.

--------------------
NEXT WEEK:

(Will) 1. I'm wanting the main menu to be functioning correctly and finished

(Should) 2. Add a intro title movie for the game - most likely going to make using either moviemaker or Adobe After Affects.

(Hope) 3. Create a blueprint for collecting letters

Thursday 31 January 2019

Project update - 31/01/2019

In this week I have managed to get some basic horror blueprints working.
This includes having a camera that the player can use to record footage of the game and to be able to use night vision. I've also created a slightly simpler version of this character as I know some of my levels wont have a camera and might have a flashlight or something similar.

I've blueprinted some flashing lights, so that one; they blink and two they can be activated if triggered or by an action.

Health and stamina have been added and can be filled back up by eating.

I've also done a simple level outline of where I'm planning of having my level

For the following week I will be working on finalising the characters functions and should also have a better looking level> Which I'll show on the next "project update" post

Thursday 24 January 2019

Project Update - 24/01/2019

This week I have managed to re-download all of the necessary software for my project and I have manged to get a basic main menu which works.
As I'm planning to duplicate all game controls for each of my levels I know that my plan will be to finish off the main menu then jump straight into the level design and controls.

I'm aware that I'm behind schedule and for that reason if I focus on a basic template for my level then focus on the blueprints I'm sure that I will get it done on time.

Thought process:
Give more time on blueprinting - positive: working game, less errors could include other important effects in the game such as sounds and animations
And if I run out of time at least I have a decent looking game that is working

So my plan for creating my project has slightly changed and instead ive given myself longer on blueprinting and shorter on designing.

Thursday 10 January 2019

Project Report - 10/01/2019

Today I have been working on my blackjack game and my Task 1 and 2 on Web application.

Project:
Originally, I had finished working on my Main menu and started working on the format on one of my levels. However, I lost my external hard drive that had my work on it, causing me to be behind in work. I had to wait for the 08/01/2019 for a new one to arrive. This is the reason i haven't been able to progress through my project all through December. I'm planning on working on my project this weekend 12/13th to get back to where i was and stay on track.

As I have previously done game design I am confident that I will get this project complete. So I will not change anything about my project.
